Cosmetic Lip Tattoos in NYC

Lip Blushing & Lip Neutralization

What is lip tattooing at Cori Ryan New York? My approach is all about best enhancing the natural color and shape of your lips, not about mimicking or replacing traditional makeup. My goal is to create a lip blush or lip neutralization result that feels like a more flattering version of your lips, giving you a beautiful base color that complements your natural undertone.

The most flattering enhancement comes from understanding your unique lip undertone and boosting its saturation, creating a uniform color from the center of the lips to the vermillion border (the outer edge of your lips). Since lips aren't naturally uniform in color, some areas may require more saturation than others to achieve a seamless, balanced look for your cosmetic lip tattoo.

  • What I recommend: Your natural lip color, but with a little more depth and vibrancy—more of what you already have.
  • What I advise against: Matching lipsticks or colors that are far removed from your natural undertone. While we can always find a balance that works best for you, it's important to stay within the range of your natural lip color. This ensures the most harmonious result that will age well.

Ultimately, my approach to lip blushing is about enhancing your lips to look their absolute best— with natural depth and color that’s uniquely yours.

Lip Blush

Lip blush is for clients with relatively even-toned natural lip color, who are looking to add more color to their lips and more definition to their lip shape. Pigment color is custom-mixed per client based on the client's undertone. The result is the ideal color for your complexion: your lips, but better.

Lip Neutralization

Lip neutralization is for clients with uneven-toned natural lip color. This often presents as varying shades of brown or grey areas on the lips. The goal of the service is to "neutralize" the brown or gray areas so they match the lip's pinker undertones, for a more even base color. Once neutralization is achieved, clients may opt to enhance their lips with lip blush at their touch-up session.

ENHANCE & DEFINE YOUR NATURAL LIP COLOR

The Process: Consultation
When you arrive for your appointment, we’ll start with a consultation to discuss your goals and expectations for the lip blush or lip neutralization service so I can find a path that is right for you. I’ll ask you to tell me about your lips—what’s your story? What do you know about lip tattooing, and why are you interested in this service? Most importantly, we’ll explore whether my approach aligns with your goals and if this service can give you the result you're looking for.

Common client goals and concerns I can help best with:

  • I want my lips to always look vibrant and healthy. They feel colorless or lifeless now.
  • The border of my lips is pale, which makes them look smaller than they actually are. I’d love to enhance the shape and definition of my lips to make them appear as full and balanced as possible.
  • There are dark spots (grey or brown) on my lips, and I’d like to even them out and bring more pink tones to match the rest of my lips.

Common client goals that cannot be achieved with this service:

  • I love a bold red lipstick look and want the tattoo to replace my lipstick.
  • I prefer a nude lipstick look and want the tattoo to replace my lipstick.
  • I like to overline my lips to make them look bigger, and I want the tattoo to replace my lip liner.

This NYC lip blush consultation is key to ensuring that you're hoping to achieve a realistic cosmetic lip tattoo and that we’re on the same page about the results. Ultimately, my goal is to provide natural, long-lasting enhancements tailored to your unique features.

FINDING THE RIGHT COLOR FOR YOUR LIP BLUSHING

The Process: Photos and Color Analysis
A crucial step in the lip blush or lip neutralization process at my NYC studio happens before I even touch your lips: I’ll take photos under studio lighting to carefully analyze your natural lip undertones. Together, we’ll review the photos to identify your true lip color, which will allow me to select the perfect pigment to enhance and complement what you already have during the lip tattooing process or to decide if you will benefit from lip neutralization before proceeding with lip blushing.

I know many clients feel overwhelmed when choosing a permanent lip color, but you can trust that lip blush color theory and pigment science are my specialties. There's no need for you to choose the exact color—in fact, I recommend you focus on sharing your vision for the final look while I handle the pigment selection. Rest assured, I’ll choose the perfect pigment to enhance your natural lips and give you a beautiful, flattering result for your cosmetic lip tattoo.

The Process: Sketch and Design
Once we are aligned on your lip blush goals, I’ll begin by sketching the shape of your lips where the cosmetic lip tattoo will be done. This step is about enhancing your natural lip shape, not changing it. I focus on defining the edges and refining what you already have, especially in areas lacking natural pigmentation. This way, we can create a balanced and flattering result for your lip blush.

The sketch is done with makeup and is fully adjustable. I’ll take my time to ensure you’re happy with the shape, and once it’s complete, I’ll show you the design for your approval. We’ll make any adjustments you feel necessary, and only when we are both completely satisfied with the shape will we move forward with the tattooing process. The design is a critical part of the process, so we’ll take as much time as needed to ensure it’s right.

The Process: Tattooing
This part of the appointment is the easiest for you! Once we’ve finalized the shape, I’ll begin tattooing your lips. The process typically takes 1-2 hours, depending on the size of your lips and how much work needs to be done.

A common concern I hear from clients is the fear of pain, especially in such a sensitive area. I want to reassure you that my technique is gentle, and while you may feel some discomfort, it’s usually more of an irritating sensation than pain. Most clients find it completely manageable, and many even fall asleep during the session! I’ve never had a client stop due to discomfort, so you can feel confident it won’t be as intense as expected.

I do not use numbing agents, as they can affect your lips' natural color and texture, leading to inconsistent results and a more difficult healing process. Instead, I rely on my skill and experience to ensure a smooth, comfortable session.
I typically work over the entire lip twice, then fine-tune the details to ensure everything is as perfect as possible. At the end of the session, I’ll show you the result so we can double-check everything and ensure you're completely happy with your results.

LIP BLUSH VERSUS LIP NEUTRALIZATION:
WHAT DO I NEED?

I often ask clients about the difference between lip blush and lip neutralization and which service they should book. In simple terms, lip blush is typically for clients with naturally even-toned lips, while lip neutralization is for those with darker or uneven pigmentation. However, most of my clients share a similar goal—enhancing the color of their lips.

The distinction between lip blush and lip neutralization is more important for me as your artist than for you as a client. That’s why I don’t differentiate between the two services on my booking page; I simply have clients book “lips,” and then assess what’s needed during our consultation.

The most important thing is to communicate the look you're hoping to achieve. From there, it’s my job to determine the best approach to help you achieve it and ensure your desired outcome is realistic based on your natural lip color. The same goes for the rest of my offerings, such as services relating to eyebrow tattoos in NYC and permanent eyeliner in NYC.
